Toothpaste Warning if IngestedHave you read the warning on your toothpaste label lately?Warning:
Keep out of the reach of children under 6 years of age.
If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing,
seek professional help or contact a poison control
center immediately. Toothpaste Ingestion and Fluoride Research. We know fluoride is a poison. We know if we take too much at one time it can kill us. A family in New York was awarded $750,000 dollars in 1979 after a child was killed by a fluoride treatment at a dentist’s office. But what are the long term effects of small daily amounts, especially over a period of years? Studies have been undertaken both by opponents and advocates of fluoridation. In animal and human cell research and animal testing, evidence shows fluoride to be a cancer "promoter" for some types of cancers as well as a carcinogenic. In broader studies (i.e., Are incidences for certain types of bone-related cancers higher in areas with fluoridated water than those without?) affirmative results, although telling, are considered "equivocal" since other factors may exist. Still, the combined evidence has convinced a number of other countries as well as prominent doctors and scientists in the United States that the health risk, along with additional studies showing absolutely no benefits for children’s teeth from fluoridation, to stop fluoridation or cancel plans to fluoridate water systems. Do we need more evidence? For some, there is plenty. Dr. William Marcus, Environmental Protection Agency Scientist and toxicologist. "In my opinion, fluoride is a carcinogen by any standard we use. I believe EPA should act immediately to protect the public, not just on the cancer data, but on the evidence of bone fractures, arthritis, mutagenicity and other effects." Studies show: Water fluoridated at 1 part per million increases tumor growth rate by 25%1, produces melanotic tumors2, and transforms normal cells into cancer cells3. Studies on rats showed an increase in oral precancerous, tumorous, and cancerous cells as a result of fluoride exposure4. Similar results regarding oral squamous precancerous cells and bone tumors from fluoride exposure were reported by Proctor and Gamble5-6. In human studies, fluoride has been shown to transform white blood cells into cells "suggestive of reticuloendothelial malignancy"7, gastric cancer and lung cancer have also been associated with fluoride exposure in humans.8-9 1Proceedings of the Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine 119:252-255 (1965) 2Genetics 48:307-310 (1963) 3Cancer Research 44:938-941 (1984) 4Pathology data sheets issued by Battelle Memorial Institute on April 11, 1989. 5February 22, 1990 issue of the Medical Tribune 31(4):1,12,15, (1990) 6Review of Fluoride: Benefits and Risks, Report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Fluoride, DHHS, February, February 1991, pp.D1-D7 7Archives of Internal Medicine 75:745-747 (1971) 8Japanese Journal of Public Health 14:41-47 (1967) 9Fluoride 7:153-165 (1974) The history of fluoride use in our water systems reads like an episode for the X-files…it is convoluted and complex, and until the recent declassification of government documents, many of the main players remained unidentified. It may be one of the few "conspiracy theories" with a firm footing in reality. The Atomic Energy Commission, the FDA, du Pont, the American Dental Association, the U.S. Public Health Service and a score of others were either willing participants or pawns in the promotion of fluoridation safety. The reason behind the research used for this promotion was "… not about children’s teeth. It grew directly out of litigation against the bomb program and its main purpose was to furnish scientific ammunition which the government and its nuclear contractors could use to defeat lawsuits for human injury." (Fluoride, Teeth and the Atomic Bomb, Waste Not #414, September, 1997.) No
reliable studies conducted under ethical and modern
scientific guidelines exist to substantiate any claim
that fluoride is safe. However, 500 peer-reviewed
studies exist documenting the adverse effects, including
central nervous system disorders, osteoporosis,
arthritis, increased number of bone fractures and dental
fluorosis, a discoloration of the teeth found in higher
percentages among people in any regions with fluoridated
water. Average fluoride intake is equally divided between drinking water (in fluoridated areas), food, other beverages, and dental products, meaning that even if you don't live in a fluoridated area, fluoride may still be a danger to your health. Why ever use toothpaste again or be afraid of an ingestion warning?
